In 2013, Russia passed a law banning “gay propaganda,” which has been used to suppress LGBTQ+ activism and limit the rights of gay individuals in the country. This law has come under fire from human rights organizations around the world, but the Russian government has shown no signs of repealing it.
Despite the progress made in some countries, many LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination and violence on a daily basis. According to a report by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), there are still 72 countries around the world where homosexuality is illegal, and in some countries, gay individuals can face the death penalty for their sexual orientation.
It is clear that there is still much work to be done in advancing gay rights around the world. While some countries are leading the way in promoting equality and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, others still have a long way to go. It is crucial that we continue to fight for the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, in order to create a more inclusive and equal society for everyone.
