Today, Iceland is considered one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world, with strong legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.
On the other hand, in countries like Russia, LGBTQ+ rights are severely restricted. In 2013, Russia passed a controversial law banning the “promotion of non-traditional sexual relationships” to minors, effectively censoring any positive representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in the media or public sphere. This law has led to widespread discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals in Russia, with many facing harassment, persecution, and even imprisonment for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In Saudi Arabia, being gay is punishable by death under the country’s strict interpretation of Sharia law. LGBTQ+ individuals in Saudi Arabia face extreme levels of discrimination and violence, with many forced to live in secrecy and fear for their safety. In 2019, two gay Saudi journalists sought asylum in Australia after facing persecution in their home country for their sexual orientation.
Despite the progress made in some countries, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. It is crucial for governments, organizations, and individuals to continue advocating for equality and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. As the world becomes more interconnected, it is increasingly important for countries to uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals, including those in the LGBTQ+ community.
